Breaking the Fast
This beloved Ramadan beverage, named "Moon of the Faith" in Arabic, offers gentle nutrition after fasting. The cardamom adds an aromatic dimension to the sweet apricot.
Components
- 400g dried apricot leather (Qamar Al Din sheets)
- 1 litre water
- 100g sugar (adjust to taste)
- 3-4 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- Rose water (optional)
- Ice cubes for serving
Method
- Soak: Cut apricot sheets into pieces. Place in bowl with 500ml warm water. Soak several hours or overnight until completely soft.
- Blend: Transfer softened apricot and soaking liquid to blender. Process until smooth.
- Dilute: Add remaining water. Blend again. Strain through fine sieve if desired.
- Season: Add sugar and crushed cardamom. Stir until sugar dissolves.
- Chill: Refrigerate until very cold.
- Serve: Pour over ice. Add splash of rose water if using.
Cultural Note: This drink is traditionally served to break the Ramadan fast, providing natural sugars and hydration.
